County pols trade barbs about candidate Dukakis

Democrats campaigning in the state for Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis are supporting a candidate who supports homosexual rights and abortion, but opposes school prayer, the chairman of the Greenville County Republican Party said today.

H. Michael Spivey, a lawyer serving as interim chairman following the resignation of Mike Burton last April, said voters should know that former Gov. Dick Riley, Lt. Gov. Nick Theodore, state Sen. Theo Mitchell and former Lt. Gov. Mike Daniel are backing “the most liberal candidate for president this century.”

Spivey said Dukakis has a record showing he is a “supporter of gun control, abortion, homosexual rights and against prayer in schools and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.”

Billy Webster, chairman of the Greenville County Democratic Party, said Spivey’s remarks are “utterly ridiculous … but typical of Republican rhetoric from George Bush on down.
